FAQ

SHAMISO hair oil: your questions answered

Everything people ask us about the oil, in plain answers. If yours is not here, email shamisoandco@gmail.com and we will add it.

The three that matter most: it is a cosmetic hair and scalp oil, not a medicine. It suits all hair types, and coily hair benefits most. Order by form, we reply with payment and delivery details.

What is it?

A UK-made scalp and hair oil with shea butter, coconut oil and avocado oil.

Who is it for?

Dry scalps and dry hair, all textures, including locs and protective styles.

How do I order?

Send the order form and we reply with payment and delivery details.

Ingredients

What is in SHAMISO hair oil?

Three oils: shea butter, coconut oil and avocado oil, blended in the UK in small batches. Shea butter brings vitamins A and E and a rich, moisturising feel. Coconut oil carries lauric acid and gets into the hair shaft. Avocado oil adds fatty acids and vitamin E, and keeps the blend light enough to wear.

Is it free from sulfates, parabens and silicones?

Yes. There are no sulfates, no parabens, no silicones, no mineral oil and no artificial fragrance in SHAMISO. What you smell is the oils themselves.

Does it contain nuts?

SHAMISO contains coconut and shea, which are tree-derived, and avocado. There is no peanut oil in the formula. If you have a diagnosed nut or seed allergy, patch test first and speak to your GP or pharmacist before using it.

Is it vegan?

The formula is plant-based: shea butter, coconut oil and avocado oil. If you need confirmation on any processing detail for a certification, email us and we will give you a straight answer rather than a badge we do not hold.

Using it

How much oil should I use?

A teaspoon for a full scalp treatment, or three to five drops to finish styled hair. Start smaller than you think you need. You can always add a drop, and you cannot take one away.

How often should I oil my hair?

Once or twice a week for coily and curly hair, and every one to two weeks for wavy or straight hair. Oil the scalp as well as the ends. Finishing drops can be used most days on the ends.

Do I wash it out?

For a treatment, yes. Leave it on for 30 minutes or overnight, then shampoo and condition as normal. For shine, leave three to five drops in on dry hair.

Can I sleep in it?

Yes. Many people oil the scalp, cover with a cap or silk scarf and wash it out in the morning. Use an old pillowcase or a silk one, because oil marks cotton.

Will it make my hair greasy?

Only if you use too much. Fine and straight hair needs a drop or two. Coily hair can take a teaspoon. If hair feels heavy after a treatment, use less next time rather than washing twice.

Does the oil need to be rinsed out?

No. It is a leave-in oil, so you can wear it all day. For a deep treatment, leave it 30 minutes or overnight and then shampoo it out.

Hair types

Is SHAMISO suitable for 4C hair?

Yes, and 4C hair usually benefits most. Use it as a pre-wash treatment once or twice a week, oil the scalp in sections, and seal twists, braids and locs with a few drops.

Can I use it on fine or straight hair?

Yes, sparingly and mostly on the scalp the night before you wash. One or two drops on the ends is plenty. Heavy oiling is what makes fine hair look flat.

Can I use it on locs?

Yes. Oil the scalp every one to two weeks between retwists, and keep most of it off the loc shaft to avoid build-up at the roots.

Is it suitable for colour-treated or relaxed hair?

Yes. Chemically processed hair is usually more porous and drier, so weekly scalp and length treatment helps it feel less brittle. Wash it out after treating.

What about children's hair?

The oil is a cosmetic product and can be used on children's hair with a lighter hand. Patch test first. Keep it out of reach of small children and away from eyes.

Scalp and hair concerns

Will it help with hair loss?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. Hair loss has many causes and needs a doctor. SHAMISO is a cosmetic oil that conditions hair and scalp. It cannot regrow hair.

Will it cure my dandruff?

No. Dandruff is a scalp condition and needs a medicated treatment, usually from a pharmacy. Oil can comfort a dry scalp, but it is not a treatment for dandruff, psoriasis or eczema.

My scalp is itchy. Should I oil it?

If it is dryness, oiling can help. If it is itchy, sore, flaking and not settling, or you have redness or scabs, stop and see a pharmacist or GP. Oil on an inflamed scalp can make things worse, and this is the point where a cosmetic oil is not the answer.

Will it stop my hair breaking?

Coconut oil helps reduce protein loss from hair, which is one of the things behind breakage. It will not undo breakage from tight styles, rough handling or heat damage, and no hair oil will. Treat hair gently and the oil gets a better chance to help.

Orders and delivery

How do I order?

Fill in the order form with how many bottles you want and your town or city. We reply by email with the total, payment details and a delivery estimate, usually within one working day.

Do you deliver outside the UK?

Not yet, UK only for now. If you are outside the UK, email us and we will tell you honestly whether and when that changes.

How long does delivery take?

We make in small batches, so dispatch windows vary. When we reply to your order we give you the real next dispatch date. After dispatch, most UK addresses receive within two to four working days.

Can I return a bottle?

Unopened bottles can be returned within 14 days of delivery for a refund. For hygiene reasons we cannot accept opened cosmetic products unless they are faulty. If something arrives damaged or wrong, we replace or refund it, including postage.

Trade and stockists

Can I stock SHAMISO in my salon or shop?

Yes, if you trade in the UK. Use the wholesale form with your business name, location and roughly how many units you would start with, and we will send trade pricing and minimums.

Where can I buy SHAMISO in person?

We are building a stockist list across the UK and publish it on the Where to Buy page as shops come on board. If you would rather buy in person, tell us your town and we will point you to the nearest stockist or arrange collection where we can.

Keeping and storing

How should I store the oil?

Somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight, with the lid on. A cupboard beats a bathroom windowsill, because oils keep better when they are not sitting in heat.

Why has my oil gone solid or grainy?

Shea butter melts at body temperature and sets again as it cools, so in a cold room your oil may firm up or look grainy. That is the shea doing what shea does, not a fault. Warm the bottle in your hands or stand it in a bowl of warm water for a minute and it goes smooth again.
